Professional Drone racing: London set to host championship event in 2017

The UK’s first professional drone race will be staged in London next year as a headline event during London Tech Week.

Race organisers The Drone Racing League (DRL) will bring the elite race series to London, with their championship event to be hosted at the iconic Alexandra Palace on June 13.

Eight pilots will compete to be crowned the “best in the world” during the winner-take-all season finale, which will air in 2017 on the newly announced Sky Sports Mix channel.

The DRL involves pilots flying drones at speeds of up to 90 miles per hour through neon-lit obstacle courses, while wearing headsets that give them a first-person view (FPV) of their craft thanks to cameras mounted onto the drones.

The league was founded in 2015 and is currently running its first full season, with races taking place in Los Angeles and Miami.

In September this year, DRL announced a media partnership with Sky Sports in the UK and Ireland to deliver ten, one hour episodes covering five races of the 2016 season.

DRL will also be broadcast across Europe and North America, following additional broadcasting deals with ESPN and 7Sports.
